UPDATE: Moment Uduak Akpan Attempted To Escape After Death Sentence [Photos]
Uduak Akpan, the first accused in the murder of a graduate of the University of Uyo, late Iniubong Umoren, attempted to escape shortly after he was sentenced to death by hanging.
TrackNews earlier reported that Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court sentenced Akpan to death by hanging for the murder of Umoren.
The accused was also sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of rape preferred against him.
After the court ruling, Akpan attempted to run out of the court but it took the intervention of the police to stop him from escaping.
However, the court discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan and sister, Anwan Akpan, the second and third accused, who were standing trial for accessory after the fact to murder.
TrackNews recalls that on April 2021, Umoren was murdered and buried in a shallow grave while she was job-hunting in preparation for NYSC mobilization.
Akpan was said to have lured the victim by inviting her for a job interview and her sister harboured him in her residence in Calabar in a bid to assist him to escape justice.
The suspect was however arrested and paraded by the Nigerian police after he confessed that he murdered Umoren after an argument broke out between them.
