Police arrest two Bayelsa undergraduates for cultism, recover pistol

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two students of the state-owned Niger Delta University for unlawful possession of a revolver pistol and cultism.

A statement on Wednesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, identified the undergraduates as Joshua Daniel and Kevin Are.

Daniel is a 300-level student of the Department of Economics, while Are is a 200-level student of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Butswat said the suspects were nabbed with the gun on Tuesday at the Amassoma Jetty, the university’s host community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the suspects confessed to be members of the Vikings Confraternity.

He said they would be arraigned when investigation was concluded.

Butswat stated, “The suspects, Joshua Daniel, 23, a 300-level student of the Economics Department, and Kevin Are, 21, a 200-level student of the Mechanical Engineering Department, were arrested at the Amassoma Jetty on March 16, 2021, around 3am in possession of a revolver pistol.

“The suspects confessed to the membership of the Vikings Confraternity. Meanwhile, they will be charged at the end of investigation.”
