Two convicts freed illegally in Ogun, lawyer petitions Aregbesola, others
TRACKING_____The alleged release of two convicts at the Abeokuta Correctional Home, without completing their respective jail terms, has sparked controversy.
The convicts, Mufutau Oguntoyinbo and Olamilekan Bankole, were sentenced to three months imprisonment by a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on January 23, 2020.
Three other persons, including Oguntoyinbo Idowu, Olamilekan Akinola and Moruf Oni, who were arraigned with the convicts, were given option of fine in the judgement.
Alarmed by the alleged corruption in the prisons system, a legal practitioner, Barrister Fazaz Daudu, has petitioned the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and other relevant stakeholders.
A copy of the petition obtained Tuesday by our correspondent was titled, “Corruption in Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command as Warder released convicts without the order of the Court.”
The petitioner stated that he was a solicitor to the complainant in a case with charge No: MOT/583C/2019, between the Commissioner of Police and the accused, Mufutau Oguntoyinbo, Oguntoyinbo Idowu, Olamilekan Bankole, Olamilekan Akinola and Moruf Oni.
In order to cover up their atrocities, Daudu said, the convicts allegedly arranged with prison officers in collaboration with the prosecution to take the convicts to another correctional home different from the place ordered by the court.
