Achievers University shuts indefinitely as students protest power outage
Achievers University, Owo, in Ondo State has suspended academic activities indefinitely following the protest that rocked the institution over prolonged power outage.
The private institution also ordered the immediate vacation of the school premises and halls of residence by the students in order to prevent breakdown of law and order.
According to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Samuel Aje, the move became imperative after the situation got out of hand due to the students’ rampage.
It was also gathered that the management of the university also intercepted WhatsApp messages indicating that the students were “poised for war”.
Prof Aje in a statement said “Last Thursday 12th August, 2021, the two giant generators supplying students area collapsed. Immediate steps were taken to remedy the situation. One of the generators was fixed on Monday 16th while repair work on the other is ongoing.
“This repair cost the University millions of Naira, but we are not complaining as we see it as a duty that we must perform for a conducive learning environment. Unfortunately our students are not patient enough for us to fully fix the problems.”
Meanwhile, the institution vowed that all the students fingered in the disruption of peace within the institution will be disciplined in line with the provisions of the University students’ handbook.
