APC Controversies in Kano: Party Rules Out Ganduje’s Suspension, Sacks Ward Leaders

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), State Working Committee, has made a decisive move regarding the suspension of the National Chairman of the party, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje. The committee has overruled Ganduje’s suspension, which was initiated by the APC Ganduje ward in Dawkin Tofa Local Government, and has also suspended the ward party leaders who took part in the suspension of Ganduje.

In a swift response to the initial suspension, the APC in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area has thwarted the action and sacked those responsible for suspending Ganduje. Chairman Inusa Dawanau stated that those behind the suspension of the party’s national chairman were engaged in anti-party activities, and their meetings with the opposition were exposed.

The state Working Committee has adopted the suspension of the ward’s APC leaders who were behind Ganduje’s suspension, sanctioning them for six months. A special investigations panel has been set up to verify various allegations against them. The committee has declared Ganduje’s suspension invalid, null, and void, emphasizing that it cannot stand.

The state’s APC chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, stated that they have accepted the decisions of the Local Government party leaders and are currently investigating the culprits’ anti-party activities. He mentioned, “We have evidence of meetings between the State Government officials and those who suspended the National Chairman, and the State Working Committee has agreed to sanction them for six months. They will remain suspended until the expiration of the period.”

It is important to note that the ward’s legal adviser, Halliru Gwanjo, cited allegations levelled against Ganduje by the Kano State Government as the reason for Ganduje’s suspension from the party.

In another development, the Kano State High Court has fixed April 17, 2024, for the arraignment of Abdullahi Ganduje, the immediate past governor of the state, his wife, son, and five others for alleged bribery. The charges include an allegation of a $413,000 bribery, diversion, and misappropriation of funds totalling N1.38 billion. However, the Federal High Court in Kano has ruled that the Kano Public Compliant and Anti-Corruption Commission lacks the power to investigate Ganduje over an alleged $5m bribery video. Justice Abdullahi Liman stated that the offence is a federal offence that falls under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
