El-Rufai visits Gowon after two meetings with SDP leaders
Days after meeting with leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the second time, former Kaduna State governor and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai has visited ex-military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
El-Rufai’s visit to Gowon further fuels speculations of his plan to defect to the SDP and contest for the position of president in 2027.
Politics Nigeria recalls that El-Rufai played a key role in President Bola Tinubu’s emergence as presidential candidate of the APC in 2023.
The former Kaduna governor insisted that power must return to the west after ex-president Muhammadu Buhari’s eight year term.
However, the National Assembly rejected El-Rufai’s ministerial nomination over a security report.
El-Rufai had remained silent after that incident.
But last week, a viral video showed El-Rufai having a meeting with the leaders of the SDP, a move that sparked reactions especially on social media.
“I don’t care,” El-Rufai was quoted to have said.
The former Kaduna Governor also attended another meeting at the Abuja residence of Senator Abubakar Gada, alongside SDP chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and other party chieftains.
It was gathered that the move was made towards strengthening his political affiliations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
