Federal Government Reiterates Warning Against NLC’s Planned Protest, Labels it Illegal
The Federal Government, under the leadership of Tinubu’s administration, has once again issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) regarding its proposed nationwide protest against the escalating cost of living in the country.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, delivered the cautionary message, emphasizing the potential for the procession to be hijacked and exacerbate the already dire situation.
Despite the government’s admonitions, NLC President Joe Ajaero reaffirmed the organization’s intention to proceed with the protest as scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The genesis of the planned protest stems from the government’s alleged failure to implement agreements reached with the NLC on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy. The NLC had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the widespread hardship.
In response, Onanuga, speaking in an interview with TrackNews Media, denounced the planned protest as a violation of the law, labeling it an “illegal undertaking.” He cited communication from the Attorney General to the NLC’s lawyer, affirming the illegality of the protest and highlighting it as a breach of a court order.
While denying any intent to disrupt the protest, Onanuga emphasized the government’s stance on the matter, cautioning the NLC to adhere to the court order and refrain from proceeding with the illegal protest.
