Former Imo State Adviser Urges NEMA, SEMA to Avert Disaster

Former Imo State Governor’s Special Adviser on Orientation, Chief Dr. Fidel Onyeneke, has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to implement measures to prevent disasters.

He emphasized the need for these agencies to educate rural dwellers on precautionary measures against flooding, especially in light of the heavy rainfall currently affecting various parts of the country, including Imo State.

Onyeneke emphasized the importance of proactive measures such as clearing waterways of debris to prevent flooding. He expressed concern over the nonchalant attitude of many residents towards preparing for potential flood disasters. He urged state and local governments to provide machinery and manpower to help vulnerable communities prevent floods.

Furthermore, Onyeneke suggested the establishment of make-shift camps in riverine areas to accommodate individuals who may be displaced by floods. He also called for government agencies and NGOs to engage in extensive public engagement to educate the public on protecting the environment and farmland from flooding.
