THE UN says the world population has officially surpassed eight billion people.

As a result, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (PMNCH) has called for greater attention to policy and funding for the health and well-being of the world’s largest generation.

According to the report, 1.8 billion adolescents and youth (aged 10 to 24) face an unprecedented number of health and well-being challenges.

The PMNCH also stated that adolescence is a critical stage of development, but only 1.6% of development health assistance supported adolescent programming between 2003 and 2015.

The organization stated this in a press release signed by its Board Chair and former New Zealand Prime Minister, Hon Helen Clark, regarding the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP2022) in Pattaya, Thailand.

“A rising global movement of 1.8 billion young people calls for greater attention to policy and financing for their health and well-being,” Clark stated, “as the largest generation of young people in history – 1.8 billion adolescents and youth (aged 10 to 24) – faces an unprecedented number of health and wellbeing challenges.”

“Adolescence is a critical stage of development, but only 1.6% of development health assistance supported adolescent programming between 2003 and 2015.” The triple threat of conflict, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation significantly.

“At this week’s International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP2022) in Pattaya, Thailand, ensuring high quality sexual and reproductive care for adolescents and young people was high on the agenda.”

“ICFP2022 concluded with the release of a global consensus report, Let Them Know: A Youth-Led AYSRHR Global Roadmap for Action,” according to the report’s summary. The roadmap, developed by more than 40 youth-led organizations, is dedicated to achieving full sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice for all young people.
