Spain signs law allowing menstrual leave for women
Women in Spain now have the right to take time off work when they have their period, according to a new sexual and reproductive health law, which came into effect on Thursday.
The new law titled “Gender Equality bill” was put forward by the left-wing government and approved by the parliament in February, and since then have passed a series of amendments.
Female workers in Spain only require a doctor’s note to take menstrual leave according to the law.
The duration of the leave from work is in principle unlimited.
According to the law, the duration of the leave depends on how severe the menstrual pain is and how long it lasts.
The costs are covered by the state.
Speaking after the parliamentary vote, Equality Minister Irene Montero said it is a “historic day for the advancement of feminist rights.”
