Bayelsa To Honor Major Adaka Boro With Public Holiday
A bill seeking to immortalize the late Niger Delta revolutionary and hero, Major Isaac Boro, with a special day to honour his memory has scaled second reading on the floor of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
The bill which is being sponsored by the former speaker and the member representing Kolokuma-Opokuma Constituency 1, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Tonye Isenah, received wide support from other legislators during the plenary.
Fifty years after leading an armed struggle to protest against environmental and economic injustices on the marginalized people of the Niger Delta region, a bill seeking to immortalize Major Boro with an official public holiday in his home state is being received with enthusiasm on the floor of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers described the Niger Delta icon as a prophet whose words brought about a consciousness to demand justice on issues of environmental degradation and marginalization.
Following positive responses from the legislators on the Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro Memorial Bill which later scaled second reading, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobore, thereafter, committed it to the House Joint Committee on Ijaw National Affairs and Culture.
