Mr. Anthony Sani, former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, has chastised the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for selecting former Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate in the 2023 general election, Track News reports.

Sani based his position on what he called Nigerians’ religious sensitivity at a time when many are calling for inclusivity in the task of nation building.

“The challenges posed by the Muslim-Muslim ticket are not so much about winning elections as they are about the aftermath of governance in an era when some notable Nigerians have alleged Islamization agenda against APC government, however misguided,” he says.

“This is because a Muslim-Muslim ticket will provide such people with more ammunition against the APC government, especially since it contradicts the APC candidate’s promise to unite the country by making Nigeria feel great again with the promise of glory days ahead.”

Sani went on to say that Tinubu should have settled for a Muslim-Christian ticket in the interests of those who fear religious dominance in some form or another.

“I had hoped a Muslim-Christian ticket would be more expedient, considering that such a ticket will not scare the Muslim North due to the electoral value of Christians who control only three states out of nineteen Northern states, while also appeasing the South, which is predominantly Christian,” he continued.

“If the APC wins the elections on a Muslim-Muslim ticket, I hope the regime will be mindful of the challenges and go as far as efforts can go to dispel misconceptions through good governance, rendering such identity politics obsolete.”
