There was a mild drama at the Senate on Wednesday, during the screening of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olukoyede brought up the Senate President as an example while discussing an ongoing corruption investigation.

“If we are investigating the Senate President, for instance,” Olukoyede said, causing an eruption of laughter among the legislators.

The laugh escalated even more when Senator Godswill Akpabio advised the EFCC Chairman-nominee against using his name as an illustration in the corruption inquiry.

Akpabio said, “I appreciate the nominee’s intention to use the Senate President as an example. However, Mr. nominee, let’s put the Senate President aside for now and focus in this direction,” as he pointed to the opposition lawmakers’ seats.

Following the laughter, Mr. Olukoyede continued his speech without specifically mentioning anyone’s name, emphasizing, “When you’re combating corruption, you become the adversary of everyone.”

It’s worth noting that Akpabio faces allegations of a N108.1 billion fund misappropriation case before the anti-corruption agency. The EFCC initiated an investigation into the former Akwa Ibom governor following a petition by Abuja-based lawyer and activist Leo Ekpenyong.

Akpabio was detained by the commission on charges of fraudulent activities, though he has consistently asserted his innocence.
