Argentina vs. France: Why Messi’s goal in the World Cup final not ruled out?

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has explained why Lionel Messi’s World Cup final extra-time goal was upheld.

The goal has sparked debate in France, with many claiming it should not have been allowed.

Argentina took a 3-2 lead after Messi scored from close range in the second period of extra time.

Some observers believe the goal should have been ruled out because two Argentina substitutes ran onto the field before the ball crossed the line.

A goal should be disallowed if an extra person is on the field when the goal is scored, according to FIFA rules.

However, IFAB told The Athletic that the rule would only apply if the players interfered with play.

Kylian Mbappe equalized from the penalty spot, but Argentina went on to win the shootout 4-2.
