Cristiano Ronaldo hits back at DC United manager, Wayne Rooney over his recent criticism
Adeleye Kunle
Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted angrily to DC United manager Wayne Rooney’s recent criticism of the former Real Madrid and Juventus star.
Ronaldo believes his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney is envious because his (Rooney’s) career is over.
During an interview, Rooney, who now manages Major League Soccer club DC United, was not entirely negative about Ronaldo.
Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer believes the Portuguese can still be an asset to the club if he ‘gets his head down.’
Rooney and Ronaldo led one of United’s most ferocious attacks in five seasons, and the former was irritated by the latter’s disrespect for manager Erik ten Hag by refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last month.
Ten Hag punished the 37-year-old for storming down the tunnel before full-time and leaving the stadium before the game was over.
Rooney praised the Dutchman for stamping his authority at the club and called Ronaldo’s behavior “unacceptable.”
Rooney even suggested that United would be a better team without the Portuguese forward.
In an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo slammed Rooney for his remarks.
Ronaldo told Piers Morgan Uncensored, “I don’t know why he criticizes me so harshly… Probably because he has retired and I am still playing at a high level.
“I’m not going to say I’m better looking than him. Which is correct…”
