Eguavoen Replaces Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles Coach

Former Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen has returned to Nigeria’s bench on an interim basis, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.

The NFF announced the termination of Franco-German, Gernot Rohr’s contract and revealed the appointment of current Technical Director, Eguavoen as the “Technical Adviser” of the Super Eagles on an interim basis.

Eguavoen, part of Nigeria’s golden generation in 1994, will be assisted by reinstated coach, Salish Yusuf, former Enyimba coach, Paul Aigbogun, Joseph Yobo, Terry Eguaoje, and goalkeeper trainer, Aloysius Agu.

Former internationals Jayjay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal will also assist the coaching crew in supposed technical and ambassadorial positions.

NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi said at the announcement of Eguavoen as coach that;

“The relationship between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr Rohr has come to an end. We thank him for his services to the Super Eagles and Nigeria.

“We also want to thank the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports for their collaboration and guidance all through.”

Eguavoen was Nigeria’s coach when the country finished in third place at the 2006 African Cup of Nations and was also in charge of the team for a short spell in 2012, as Nigeria failed to make it to the AFCON.

He recently led a select home-based Nigerian professionals to a friendly against Mexico, where they lost 4-0.

Eguavoen will be in charge of the Nigerian national team in Cameroon in the 2022 AFCON which is less than a month away.
