Super Falcons beat Australian Club 8-1 in Game ahead of World Cup
The national women’s football team, Super Falcons, thrashed Australian club Lions FC 8-1 in a friendly match on Saturday.
TRACKNEWS reports that the match, played in Gold Coast, Australia, was a warm-up for the Super Falcons’ participation in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Asisat Oshoala scored twice for the Super Falcons, while Ifeoma Onumonu, Toni Payne, Rasheedat Ajibade, Halimatu Ayinde, Uchenna Kanu, and Gift Monday each scored once.
The win was a morale-boosting victory for the Super Falcons, who are in a tough group at the World Cup alongside Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.
The Super Falcons are currently in Australia for a 15-day training camp ahead of the World Cup.
Coach Randy Waldrum said he was pleased with the team’s performance against Lions FC.
“We played well and scored some good goals,” Waldrum said. “We are still working on our system, but we are getting better every day.”
The Super Falcons will face Canada in their opening match of the World Cup on July 21.
Despite being drawn into a tough group at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum is confident his team can progress beyond the group stage.
The Super Falcons are in Group A alongside Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.
The Super Falcons have been training in Australia for the past two weeks. They will play one more friendly match before the World Cup: against New Zealand on July 17.
The Super Falcons have never won the FIFA Women’s World Cup, but they have reached the semi-finals on three occasions.
Waldrum said he believes the team has the potential to go even further this year.
