UEL: Wonderful, fantastic footballer – Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves hail Barcelona star
Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes believes the club will return with a better offer to try to sign ‘wonderful’ Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
Jong was Erik ten Hag’s top transfer target last summer with Manchester United spending months locked in talks over a move to bring him to Old Trafford.
But the Dutch international was said to have strongly rejected a move to old Trafford even after an agreement was reached between the two clubs.
Scholes believes Manchester United will renew their attempts to sign the Netherlands midfielder at the end of the season, believing he can thrive in a No6 role.
“Yeah of course,” Scholes told BT Sport about United moving again for the Dutchman.
“He is a wonderful footballer, I disagree slightly with Owen [Hargreaves] thinking he is better in the pivot position as a Busquets type.
“I think he was probably brought here to replace Busquets but Busquets keeps going. I think he is more suited to that role.”
Another former United midfielder, Owen Hargreaves also described the Dutchman as a fantastic footballer, saying he would like to see him play for Manchester United.
“You would love to see Frenkie de Jong play at Old Trafford, A fantastic footballer, can dribble…”, he said.
