2023: Low awareness, poor turnout trails INEC’s display of voters register – Group
Yiaga Africa, an election monitoring group, has observed a number of challenges and discrepancies already trailing the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) display of voter registers across the country.
In accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2022, INEC began displaying the Preliminary Register of Voters (PRV) for public scrutiny on Saturday, November 12, 2022, and it is expected to be completed on Saturday, November 25, 2022.
Yiaga Africa criticized INEC in its preliminary assessment of the display exercise for what it called poor publicity, a development that manifested in low citizen awareness and a late start of the process on November 12 when it kicked off the exercise.
It stated that reports from across the states indicated a possible lack of citizen awareness and a late start to the process, particularly in Kano Central Senatorial Districts, where the process began late, with centers opening at 1:00 p.m.
Yiaga learned from INEC officials in Oyo state, specifically in some wards visited in Egbeda, that they were not aware of the assignment for the exercise until late in the day, resulting in low awareness of the display, claims, and objections in the state.
INEC was also accused of failing to display the temporary register on the first day of the exercise. In Ibadan North, fewer electorates came out on the first day to check their details on the register and file claims and objections.
