REPORTS of extortion of new intakes at training camps and institutes under the Ministry of Interior are becoming worrisome and embarrassing, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola lamented yesterday.
He warned perpetrators to desist as the government would not condone such unprofessional and unethical behaviour.
Aregbesola sounded the warnings at the opening of the third and fourth quarters performance review of the Ministry and its agencies/services at the headquarters of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Sauka, Abuja.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Fire Service ( FFS) are agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
The Minister, who did not mention the specific agencies extorting new intakes and applicants at their training camps, said the government would not allow such behaviour to continue anywhere.
Addressing the management staff of agencies and senior officials of the Ministry, Aregbesola said it was necessary to undertake the performance review in order to address gaps and noticeable lapses.
While admitting that the ministry and the agencies still have a lot of things to be done, he noted that overall, they have done excellently.
In appraising the performance of the Ministry, Aregbesola said:” I must say that our services have improved tremendously and quite noticeably too, with the presentation of our performance at the Second Ministerial Retreat organized by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation which was applauded and well received.
