The Bauchi branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the Federal Government of being uninterested in funding the country’s public universities.

It claimed that underfunding public universities in the country under the guise of a lack of funds was a deliberate attempt to introduce exorbitant school fees that ordinary Nigerians could not afford.

Ibrahim Inuwa, the branch’s chairperson, stated this at a press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat, ATBU, shortly after a peaceful protest on Tuesday.

According to the Track News , the Union held a congress after which they staged a protest from their secretariat and marched to the main ATBU gate before returning to their starting point.

They sang solidarity songs and carried placards that read, among other things, “ASUU calls for UTAS deployment,” “ASUU rejects prorating academics’ salaries,” “ASUU is more patriotic than FGN officials,” “Release withheld academic salaries,” “We say no to privatization of public universities,” and “IPPIS & Pro-rata payment to academics are distractions from our demands.”
