IJAW NATIONAL CONGRESS DEMANDS END TO INJUSTICES AGAINST OKOMU-IJAWS IN EDO STATE

In a press release dated May 25, 2024, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has raised its voice against the persistent injustices faced by the Okomu-Ijaw community in Edo State, Nigeria. The INC, representing the Ijaw ethnic nationality globally, condemns the systemic marginalization, deprivation, neglect, and impoverishment of the indigenous people of Okomu Kingdom.

The grievances outlined by the INC include the dispossession of ancestral lands without adequate compensation, armed invasions resulting in community displacement and property destruction, and the deliberate underdevelopment of Okomu Kingdom. Despite being a significant contributor to government revenue through its natural resources, Okomu has been denied its fair share of benefits, including royalties, infrastructure, and employment opportunities.

The INC alleges discrimination against the Okomu-Ijaws as minorities in Edo State, citing unfair treatment in governance, traditional leadership, economic opportunities, and resource allocation. They demand an end to discriminatory practices, fair compensation for land acquisition, restitution of unpaid royalties, inclusion in corporate management, political representation, and the release of unlawfully detained community members.

The press release warns against complicity in the oppression of Okomu-Ijaws and calls for peaceful dialogue to address the grievances. Failure to address these demands within a reasonable time will result in legal action.

The INC’s statement emphasizes the need for social justice, economic empowerment, and political inclusion for the Okomu-Ijaws, echoing their rallying cry: “Enough is Enough!”
