INC Condemns Delta Killings, Urges FG to Temper Justice with Mercy
The apex socio-cultural organization representing the interests of Ijaw Nation, Ijaw National Congress (INC) strongly condemns the gruesome killings of 17 soldiers on a peace mission to Okuoma, an Urhobo community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
This unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday, the 14th of March 2024.
The President INC, Prof Benjamin Okaba while expressing deep condolence with the Nigerian Army over deceased military personnels, appealed to the feuding Okuama and Okoloba communities to sheath their sword, while calling on the Military high command and Delta state government to institute and apply a globaly applicable strategy of inquiries and bring to book perpetrators of this dastardly act.

INC calls on the Federal Government to consider applying cushion to the reprisal attacks by the military, noting that information reaching the INC has it that these actions have resulted in the burning down of Okuama Community in Delta State, on the 18th of March 2024, and a neighbouring Igbomotoru community in Bayelsa State, also resulting in the death of approximately 11 people as of today, the 19th of March 2024.
According to Prof. Okaba, INC recognizes the gravity of this inhuman and offensive situation. However, we urge the federal government to exercise restraint and temper justice with mercy. While we understand the need for justice to be fully served, we must also consider the potential consequences of further violence and destruction, which is most surffered by the innocent. These tragic actions, in response to the regrettable act of killing up to 17 military men on duty in the Okuama Community, could further escalate the long-managed restiveness in the Niger Delta region.
Okaba stated that it is crucial to avoid the continued distruction of innocent lives and properties in the quest for the required justice. Such actions, if not checked, would only serve to exacerbate tensions and worsen the already fragile security situation in the region and the nation at large.
The INC implores the federal government, the Delta, and Bayelsa State governments, to without further delay seek peaceful resolutions and engage in dialogue with all critical stakeholders involved. By doing so, we can work towards a lasting solution that addresses the root causes of the unrest and ensures the safety and well-being of all Nigerians, particularly the Ijaw people.

The INC remains committed to promoting peace, justice, and unity in the Niger Delta region. We call on all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution.
We urge the federal government and all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of innocent lives and the preservation of our land.
