Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
In the last week, the Lagos State Environmental Enforcement and Special Offences Unit impounded 150 motorcycles for violating traffic rules.
Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the unit’s spokesman, said yesterday that ten people, including motorcyclists and passengers, were also arrested and prosecuted for using the BRT corridor.
He stated that the motorcycles were seized following a week-long operation in Ogba, Apapa, “Trade Fair,” Elemoro, Ojodu, and surrounding areas.
Earlier this year, the Lagos State government prohibited commercial motorcyclists from operating in certain areas of the state.
According to Abdulraheem, the ban was followed about 95% of the time, but the 150 motorcycles impounded were used to violate the order.
“We have noticed that commercial motorcyclists have aggressively returned to the restricted routes.”
“Any commercial motorcyclist who is apprehended will have his motorcycle crushed.” Passengers and riders who are apprehended will face charges in court. Ten commercial motorcycle operators and passengers were detained for riding on the restricted BRT corridor.
“They appeared in court and were each fined N50,000 or sentenced to three months in the Badagry Correctional Centre.”
