People thinking redesigning Naira note will harm stashers naive – Gumi
By Adeleye Kunle
Controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmed Gumi has again slammed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over the move to redesign some Naira notes.
In a statement on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi expressed pessimism that the decision of the apex bank would cause more harm to average Nigerians than what is being expected.
According to him, those thinking that the move would harm politicians and individuals who stashed billions of Naira in their houses are naive.
Gumi described the decision of the CBN as killing a rat in a furnished room with a hammer, saying the destruction that would accompany the redesigning would be worse.
The statement reads, “The CBN and people that think changing the Naira and money system is going to harm those with a stolen and illegally stashed currency are very naive.
“It’s like killing a rat in a furnished Room with a hammer. The destruction in trying to kill it is going to be worst that the nuisance caused by the Rat.
“The stolen money is not up to 1% of the money legally in transactions among the 200 million Nigerians. Therefore any action that will instill fear and uncertainty in a failing economy is not only detrimental but reckless and irresponsible
